Stand-up or Ground Game: Which One Rules?
The days of two lumbering heavyweights hugging each other through rounds 10-12 of a heavyweight boxing title fight are over. There is a new king in town and it is all about violence. Cage fighting, ultimate fighting, whatever you want to call it, nothing compares to it in the sports entertainment world.
Two fighters start in a cage and fight to see who can knockout, submit or outlast their opponent. The term mixed martial arts is used to describe the various disciplines each fighter must be skilled in to beat his opponent.
Often times the fight starts out with both fighters standing, but inevitably, the fight goes to the ground. Here the fighhting is very different than the traditional stand-up fighting most people are used to seeing. Grappling, as ground fighting is called, is a combination of technical wrestling to choke or put pressure on a limb to cause enough pain to cause your opponent to give up.
The debate about which style is most effective continues but in order to be a good mixed martial arts cage fighter, you must be skilled in both styles of fighting.
