What To Do If You Think There's an Intruder
The very first thing you need to do, or someone in your home needs to do, is call the police. If you can not speak, do not speak. The operator will send help to the address that shows up for your phone number. If you use a cell phone, it is likely the operator will be able to determine where you live. Cell phones are not reliable in an emergency and it is important to understand that additional steps should be taken to protect yourself until help arrives.
Plan Ahead. It is important to have a plan for a situation that could arise whereby your family needs protecting from intruders in your home. Plan to gather all family members in a room that can be defended by two people or less. A weapon of some kind would be very useful. Your plan should also include instruction on the use of the weapon for all individuals who might need to use that weapon.
Educating your children and other family members on the use of firearms or weapons of any kind is a personal matter. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED there be some education either in the home or through your local firing range or NRA chapter on the proper use and safety for each weapon.
Do not engage the intruders unless absolutely necessary. Deciding to defend yourself is a personal matter and all necessary safety should be maintained at all times. However, you only have one life and it should be protected at all costs.
