Heavy Bag Training Technique
Training is up to your imagination. However, we like to focus on certain combinations for two reasons: 1) to ensure our training is progressive and 2) make sure we don’t forget about certain technique. If we do not force ourselves to concentrate on certain techniques and drills we find ourselves doing the same thing over and over.
Our training program provides you set drills designed to keep your program progressive and ensure you are hitting all the techniques within your phase. The training drill may be: lead long foot jab, cross, hook, right kick. It does not mean that we set the timer and do the drill as many times in three minute or five minutes depending on what we have the timer set at. It means we need to make sure we work the drill in several times during our designated time period. An example of this would be to move around the bag nice and relaxed, shadow some of the defensive technique (parrying, covering, ducking, slipping, shielding etc.), jab a few times, and then work in the drill you’re your focusing on. Basically your bag work out will consist of little bit of everything and a lot of the drill we want to focus on.
These heavy bag drills are designed to help us develop our technique and at the same time increase our stamina. This bag training teaches us how to do the technique correctly through repetition. The more we do it the better our technique will get. It is like swinging a baseball bat or a golf club the more we do it the better we get at it. A couple of things are happening as we train, our body starts developing the right muscles so that we possess the actual physical ability for the technique. Another thing that occurs is we naturally start to follow the path of least resistance while training and 99.9% of the time the path of least resistance is the correct way.
Video of one of our Total Defense System instructors demonstrating the actual training drills are provided. This is a critical training aid. If you video yourself training on the heavy bag and going through the drills that we have video examples of, you will be able to critque yourself by comparing the two.
